Happy November 2009.

I hate to say it, but it is an unfortunate truth that dissatisfaction, anger, stress and frustration tend to be the driving force behind us when we actually make changes and move forward. It is our adversities that drive us to change what isn’t working right in our lives. So, as much as we all think and talk about finding peace, satisfaction, fulfillment and gratitude, for those of you who may be having a hard time accomplishing that goal, take heart and embrace the truth that your dissatisfaction may ultimately prove to be your savior, driving you to be necessary changes.

Having said all that, I have discovered a few tricks to help you move forward, change your life and reach your goals without having to be angry or unhappy while you are doing it. The first step is learning gratitude and I am sharing an article this month to help you with that.

Next month in time to help you with your New Year Resolutions, I will continue with this theme and give you more tools and suggestions to help you with those resolutions and moving forward without unpleasant nasty emotions. So, with the holidays rapidly approaching and here in the U.S., Thanksgiving literally just around the corner, I share with you my article on Gratitude with all of you.

PROSPERITY/ABUNDANCE AND THANKFULNESS

"Appreciation is a powerfully magnetic energy that helps you see the wider picture faster. As you appreciate, you see more and understand more. On an energy level, it brings intuitive breakthroughs and helps you realize the power within you. Appreciation magnetizes you to the Universal flow. When you sincerely appreciate what you have in life, you magnetize more of your heart's desires. Mathematically speaking, if people spent half as much time appreciating what they have as they do complaining about what they don't have, life would have to get better."
—Sara Paddison in The Hidden Power of the Heart: Discovering an Unlimited Source of Intelligence

With the beginning of a new holiday season just around the corner, this is an ideal time for each of us to focus on the amazing and magical effects of thankfulness, gratitude and appreciation.

This is a different sort of article from those that I usually write, but it comes from my heart. Those who work with me know that I incorporate the philosophy and suggestions of healing, prosperity and abundance in all my work. At the core of this philosophy is the belief in gratitude, thankfulness and appreciation. Gratitude can literally and figuratively change your life. It allows you to tap into the transformative energies that are available to you all of us.

Our world works like a giant duplicating machine. Whatever you focus your thoughts and energies on is what multiplies most in your life. You won’t get rich by focusing on how little money you have, but you can get rich by honoring the wealth that you already do have. And this same principal works for every aspects of your life including love, joy, confidence, fulfillment and happiness. Stop focusing on what you don’t have and turn your thoughts to all that you want, but even more than that, give thanks for all that you do have.

I know that sometimes when things are rough and stressful and you are under constant pressure, it is hard to focus on the positive or even believe that there is anything positive in your life; sometimes it seems all we can think about or see is the negative. When you are having a hard time changing your focus from negative to positive, here are a few suggestions and a little exercise to help you do just that:

  • First step: Ask yourself, what do you have that someone else might be willing to pay a million dollars for. Nothing? Think again …

    1. What about your eyesight? Do you believe that someone who has lost (or never had) the power of sight would say that eyesight would be worth at least a million dollars?

    2. What about good health? To the person who has lost physical mobility due to illness or an accident or to someone who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, "good health" would be worth at least, if not more than, one million dollars!

    3. What about freedom or a loving relationship?

    4. What about your children? I used to work for a law firm that acted as facilitators and helped people adopt a child and I can tell you there are many, many couples out there who would be more than willing to pay a million dollars if it meant that they could have a child of their own.

    5. Here’s something else. What about the ability to think and remember? To the person who may be facing Alzheimer’s, this would be worth any price.

  • Second Step: Now that we have your thoughts moving in the right direction, take a moment and think about all the other ways you are already so wealthy.

    1. What about a warm house, apartment or even just a single room to sleep in. How must that seem to the homeless person? There was a brief time in my life when I was living from day to day and didn’t know if I would have a bed to sleep in on any given night. It was a very scary time indeed. But one night I was sitting outside the cheap hotel room I was in that night (it wasn’t a very good neighborhood either), and across the parking lot I could see a lit window from the apartment building on the next street. I remember it was just before Halloween and there were some decorations stuck in the window. That lit window looked so warm and inviting that it made me cry because I didn’t have my own place and didn’t know when I would again. Whenever I start to get irritated about the daily crap we all have to deal with, I remind myself of that time and how it felt not to have that window myself and I am grateful for all that I have been given; because this Universe gives us many chances if we just open our eyes and look. Gratitude is a great way to start that process.

    2. What about that meal you just had. To the person with no food, wouldn’t that seem like a miracle or to the parent who has no food to give their child? If they could give their child your last meal, how wonderful do you think that would make them feel?

    3. What about your friends, someone there for you when you just need a shoulder or a hug?

  • Final Step: Remember that the philosophy of creating "prosperity" and “abundance” incorporates so much more than just financial wealth. Its essence is the energy and life force of our well being and that life force is fed by our desires.

If you want to be energetically aligned with all that this world has to offer, look for the evidence in your life of your current prosperity and abundance, look for everything in your life to be grateful for; honor it, think about it, focus on it and then invite more of it into your life now; and allow your desires to thrive and flow through you. Remember your desires are almost pure energy and it is that energy that acts like a gigantic magnet for you attracting all that you desire.

Being thankful can unlock the fullness of your life and make everything a bit sweeter and brighter and more joyful. As you appreciate your life, your passions, the uniqueness of who you are including all of the experiences of your life that have made you the person you are, you become more valuable to yourself and others.

So if during the past few months or even years you haven’t remembered to gives thanks. Why not take a moment now and say “thank you” and I guarantee your world will get a bit brighter and sweeter.

HEALTH TIPS

With winter and the holidays just around the corner, it becomes even more important to take care of yourself. Building your immune system and getting the right food as well as regular exercise are both crucial. Here are a few suggestions to make it a bit easier, tasty and fun:

  • Live Longer with This Red Winter Stew
Put the brakes on the ravages of time with a hearty and delicious bowl of chili. You'll get plenty of zinc, thanks to the rich red kidney beans in the stew. And a new small study showed that zinc may help both prevent and reverse age-inducing damage to DNA. Zinc intake is so important to staying young that when middle-aged men in a study went from adequate zinc intake to zinc deficiency, they showed more breaks in certain DNA strands. And guess what happened when they were placed back on a zinc-rich diet? You got it -- damage to DNA strands decreased significantly, suggesting that injured strands were repaired. Check out these other nutrients the YOU Docs recommend for thwarting Alzheimer's disease.

You want healthy DNA, because damaged DNA can speed the aging process and increase your risk for conditions like cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Zinc isn't necessarily a fountain of youth, but the study results suggest that nearly 12 percent of Americans with a zinc deficiency may be doing their bodies a disservice. So how about that bowl of chili?

  • Eat This Fall Treat for Your Heart
You probably have one on your porch right now. And your heart wants you to bring it inside and serve it up. We're talking about pumpkin. Canned or fresh, pumpkin is a superfood, according to the authors of SuperFoods HealthStyle. And this squash is especially good for your ticker because it's chock-full of carotenoids that are known to reduce heart disease risk. And that's not all, according to the book's authors, Steven G. Pratt, MD, and Kathy Matthews. Pumpkin is also a good source of potassium, magnesium, fiber, and antioxidant vitamins C and E. So don't think of this squash as merely a fall doorstep jazzer upper. Find out why pumpkin is good for your blood vessels, too.

    Patty's Pumpkin Pudding
There are healthier ways to get your fill of pumpkin than by eating pumpkin pie -- like this pumpkin pudding recipe from SuperFoods HealthStyle:

    Ingredients
    1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar
    2 to 4 teaspoons cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional
    1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, optional
2 large eggs (the SuperFoods authors recommend eggs with extra omega-3s)
    One 15-ounce can pure pumpkin
One 12-ounce can evaporated nonfat milk (or evaporated 2% milk)

    Preparation
Mix all the ingredients together and pour the mixture into an 8-by-8-inch casserole. Bake it in a preheated (350 degrees Fahrenheit) oven for about 30 minutes. Don't over bake; the center should be slightly wiggly. Cool and enjoy, or refrigerate for later use.

  • Cut Fatty-Food Cravings with This Mineral
Give yourself the power to say no to waist-padding foods by adding this to your diet: a calcium and vitamin D supplement. When female dieters did this in a recent study, they ate fewer fatty foods and lost four times more weight than the women who didn't take the supplement.

Why might a calcium supplement help? Researchers theorize that when your calcium intake is too low, your body may start craving foods rich in the mineral. And, unfortunately, many foods high in calcium are also high in fat and calories (think ice cream and full-fat cheese). But the women in the study who were getting the least calcium (less than 600 milligrams per day) lost not only more weight but also more body fat while taking a supplement.

When you take vitamin D with calcium, your body absorbs more of the calcium, so a combo supplement is best. [I recommend this all the time, but taking a Cod Liver Oil capsule with your calcium just does all sorts of good things for your body]

Try these additional tips for slimming down faster:

  • Have a clear goal. Whether you want to lose 10 pounds or 100, setting a goal and tracking your progress will help you get there.

  • Eat for the right reason. If you're eating because you're depressed rather than hungry, you need to understand yourself in order to stop.

  • Move your feet. A walk every day helps melt the pounds away.

Imagery is such a major component of hypnotherapy that I can’t even imagine doing a session without using imagery in one form or another. Those of you who have had one of my sessions or use my downloads are very familiar with the imagery I utilize. So, when I read this health tip, I just had to share it with all of you!

  • Make Your Workout Feel Like a Breeze
It would be so great if we could figure out a way of making workouts feel easy-breezy for everyone. Right? So here's the trick: Give yourself a mental-image pep talk. Apparently, imagining yourself sailing right through a workout just before you go at it can actually make the exercise feel easier, according to Tina Vindum, exercise expert and author of Outdoor Fitness.

Here's the three-step process she swears by:

    1. Picture it. Before your workout or during warm-ups, close your eyes and visualize yourself doing your thing with ease. Take a few deep breaths, and imagine the air filling your lungs and delivering oxygen to every muscle of your body. Exhale deeply.
    2. Feel it. Think about how it feels to hold your spine straight and your head high during your workout, and imagine it all feeling effortless. Picture your workout environment, and imagine yourself moving powerfully, effortlessly, and confidently through your run, walk, hike, or exercise class.
    3. Integrate it. Take these images, feelings, and thoughts with you as you step into your workout.

Try this trick for burning more calories without exercising harder.

Same Workout, New Pants Size
Make your usual workout burn more calories -- without working a stitch harder -- with this simple switch: Do cardio before you strength train.

Doing cardio first -- brisk walking, cycling, swing dancing, whatever -- can help you do your full workout, and thus burn more calories, instead of pooping out halfway (not 'cause you have to poop, but because your legs feel exhausted). And finishing your workout with weights helps boost post-workout metabolism -- the rate at which your body burns calories after you're done. The result is an overall higher calorie burn. Plus, muscle burns more calories than fat, upping the total even more.

That said, if you can do only one, do strength training. But don't make the choice. We don't. Both of us think physical activity is SO important that we both make it a priority on our schedules.

Also, don't start obsessing about what you do when. Yes, cardio-first workouts help you get a calorie-burning bonus. But if you've only got 20 minutes -- enough for a quickie weight routine -- grab it. ANY kind of exercise burns calories. It's far more important to get moving than to chew it over so long that you end up doing nothing.

In fact, what's so gratifying about exercise is that unlike the list of things you need to clean out of your life (Cheetos, excuses), physical activity is something you can add almost as much of as you want. All while watching Raymond reruns. Don't have a treadmill in front of the TV? Get some dumbbells. Or do sit-ups. Or jumping jacks. Just do something!
